On the occasion of the port explosion in Beirut on August 4th, 2020, the funeral march for the victims of the explosion took place in Vienna on August 9th, 2020. The Lebanese Club Austria organized this to help the Lebanese in Austria during this difficult time. On August 4, 2020, an explosion destroyed large parts of the Lebanese capital Beirut. Around 200 people died and up to 300,000 were left homeless. A year after the disaster, the country's economic situation has deteriorated further. In the early evening of August 4, 2020, there was a huge explosion in the port of the Lebanese capital Beirut: around 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate ignited. Ammonium nitrate is a salt made up of ammonia and nitric acid that is used to make fertilizers and explosives. The detonation had far-reaching consequences: it is estimated that around 200 people died, several thousand were injured and up to 300,000 people were left homeless. The pressure wave destroyed the port region and parts of the city, including numerous residential buildings and important infrastructure. For example, several clinics were destroyed or massively damaged in the accident, as was the city's largest granary and a power station. The World Health Organization (WHO) said the explosion had seriously affected the country's health system. The Lebanese Club activated a funeral march to mark the victims.
